I have been meditating on Matthew 10:5-8 lately where Jesus commissions His disciples, “Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood. Tell them that the Kingdom is here. Bring health to the sick. Raise the dead. Touch the untouchables. Kick out the demons… Don’t think you have to put on a fund-raising campaign before you start. You don’t need a lot of equipment. You ARE the equipment.”

Three things I observed in this incredible text…

“Go to the people right here in the neighborhood”…. How often do we think that in order to truly be effective in evangelism we have to go over seas or hit the downtown scene and mingle among sinners? Now don’t get me wrong, I think God calls people to do those very things. However, I find this text provocatively simple. He says, “Go to the very people that are surrounding your everyday life.” Don’t you think there is a reason God placed you in the neighborhood you’re in? What about the place you spend your “9-5?” Sadly, so often we overlook the very people God has called us to save! And I carefully say, if you are not faithful with the ones that God has strategically placed in your lap, the ones that live life right next to you, why would He venture to send you across the world?

“Tell them…Bring health…Raise the dead….Touch…Kick out….”…. I love the language of the Message translation, better yet, the language of Jesus. He uses action words that require an obedience response. Also, notice the authority that is being given to the disciples. He says- YOU bring health to the sick. YOU kick out the demons. He has given us all authority to do these things, and yet I wonder why so often we do not do them. I meditate so often on one of Pastor Ken’s messages where he talked about the Kingdom of God being at hand. In it he said, “remember you are Christ’s ambassadors! You carry the Kingdom of God wherever you go!” I believe we NEED to live with this mindset every day. We are Christ’s ambassadors, and just as Jesus raised the dead, healed the sick, cast out demons, we now have the authority to do so! And the Kingdom of God is expanded with every act of obedience we take…

“You are the equipment”…. This leaves no room for questioning our capability. God uses us in spite of our shortcomings. In spite of our insecurities. In spite of our failures. It’s not about your capability. “You are sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency.” You have more then enough of what you need. It is simply your life. Your testimony. Let God use you today to reach someone for Christ…. He is looking simply for obedience.
